Trump’s Crypto Gala Faces Scrutiny
The White House press secretary offered a defense of President Donald Trump’s organization of a cryptocurrency-themed gala aimed at investors of his meme coin at his golf club in the Washington area on Thursday evening.
Event Details and Promotion
Advertised as “the most EXCLUSIVE INVITATION in the World,” this black-tie-optional gathering is being marketed on its website as a chance for 220 participants to listen to Trump discuss the future of cryptocurrency. However, watchdog organizations and Democratic critics have raised concerns over the event and the associated cryptocurrency token, which reportedly amassed over $320 million in fees for its creators from launch until early May, according to Chainalysis, a blockchain analysis company. Public Citizen, a progressive advocacy group, announced plans to protest outside the venue on the night of the gala.
Press Secretary’s Response
In response to inquiries regarding potential conflicts of interest tied to the gala, press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that the president is adhering to all relevant conflict-of-interest regulations. “The American public finds it ridiculous to suggest that this president is profiting from his position,” Leavitt stated, adding that Trump was a successful businessman before entering public service and has since experienced significant financial loss, along with personal risks.
Background on the Meme Coin
Trump introduced the $TRUMP meme coin during a Crypto Ball shortly before his inauguration in January. According to the token’s website, a Trump Organization affiliate and another entity, Fight Fight Fight LLC, collectively hold 80% ownership of the coin. Meme coins typically emerge as humorous endeavors, leveraging the fame of a celebrity or a viral internet meme, but $TRUMP enticed its top investors with invitations to the exclusive gala.
Exclusive Opportunities for Investors
The event’s website indicated that the top 25 holders of the digital currency were also invited to a pre-dinner reception with Trump, along with a separate “Special VIP Tour.” The criteria for identifying these top holders were based on the average holdings over three weeks ending on May 12. Trump even promoted the dinner on his social media platform, Truth Social, featuring an image of himself with a raised fist and the slogan “Fight, Fight Fight.”
Questions About Transparency
During the Thursday press briefing, Leavitt addressed various inquiries about the gala’s implications. When asked whether the event was a means for Trump to profit from his presidential role, she noted that all of his assets are managed in a blind trust overseen by his children. “One reason many Americans reelected this president is due to his history as a successful businessman before he chose to serve publicly,” she asserted. Reporters also questioned whether Trump would disclose the list of attendees, to which she replied that she would relay the request to him. “The president is attending in a personal capacity,” Leavitt clarified. “This is not a White House event, nor is it being held at the White House.”
Criticism from Watchdog Groups
Critics, including watchdog organizations and Democrats, have denounced the gala and the cryptocurrency token for what they view as a conflict of interest. Public Citizen planned a protest outside the event, with Senator Richard Blumenthal commenting on social media that “Trump’s crypto dinner is a pay-to-play scheme,” suggesting it gives privileged access to the presidency based on financial contributions, even if the highest bidder is a foreign national previously sued for fraud by the SEC.
Controversial Figures Attend
Justin Sun, a prominent figure in the crypto space and the top holder of the $TRUMP token, was mentioned in connection with the event. He had faced legal action from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in 2023 for fraud and violations of securities laws. According to court records, federal officials requested a delay in the case to negotiate a settlement. On social media, Sun expressed his enthusiasm for attending the gala, stating, “Honored to support @POTUS and grateful for the invitation from @GetTrumpMemes to attend President Trump’s Gala Dinner as his TOP fan! I’m excited to connect with everyone, talk crypto, and discuss the future of our industry.”
